Recorded Memories
Chris Startin and Denise Evans Interview. October 1997.
Working life at James Bennett's
from the mid 1970s:
'Nothing like it was...six styles on the go...at the moment 72 styles...'
It's like a family concern, everybody knows
everybody... a nice environment to be in'
Chris and Denise were work colleagues at James Bennett Ltd, Rugby Road, Hinckley.
The interview took place during a lunch break – people chatting, phones and works siren can be heard in background. Chris and Denise talk about the stresses and demands of their particular jobs - Chris is a warehouse supervisor and Denise works in quality control (QC). They discuss the tremendous changes which have taken place during their working lives to date (mid 1970s to 1997 (date of interview)) and the growing overseas competition. They also talk about the friendliness at James Bennett’s, being dressed up before getting married, Christmas parties at the factory and fancy dress.
