A Life in the hosiery 1942-1992
From an apprentice countermen at Moore & Osborne to a finishing mechanic at the Argee:
‘In the old days you were very proud of what you were able to
do and what you produced’
‘I started work at 14 at Moore and
Osborne’s running about in the warehouse…we were making a lot of
cashmere stockings for the WAFs and ATS…after 6 months I didn’t like it
and got myself a job as an apprentice knitter down Atkins’
‘The foreman in the warehouse
(Moore & Osborne’s) a smashing chap… he taught me a
lot not just about my job but how to conduct yourself in your job…
he put me on the right track for my future life in the hosiery’
